Gulf of Alaska Trawl Bycatch Destruction of Halibut & Crab Fisheries
Groundswell has posted up on YouTube a video “GOA Trawl Bycatch” for friends and associates in the central Gulf of Alaska, re Kodiak Island grounds. Kodiak was once ‘The King Crab Capitol of the World’ and now we barely have any crab fishing – due in large part to bottom trawling, no doubt. It’s all about massive waste and destruction that harms the ocean resources, and can be found at:

The pictures contained in it are for educational purposes only. Trawlers falsely told Google that some of these photos, as posted on Tholbin’s blogspot, are “copyrighted” – huh? Did the crews agree that pictures of them were copyrightable by the boat owners, or what? This is lunacy. We include them for education, as the crime of wanton waste and destruction needs public exposure.
You should also consider watching other videos, like the ones on the work being put in to salmon extruders. However, ongoing destruction awaiting trawl design improvements is not exactly using the Precautionary Principle, is it?
And trawlers lead the way for more Gulf of Alaska “rationalization” = ‘briberization’ = privatization of resources the USA does not even own!
